Anderson Cooper's Interview with Mom Reveals Heartbreak

Before becoming the face of CNN, Anderson Cooper led an interesting, and sometimes, tragic life. On his new talk show "Anderson," the news anchor spoke with his mother, former fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt, to discuss the death of his brother Carter Vanderbilt Cooper.

Carter committed suicide in 1988 when he jumped from the 14th floor of his family's penthouse apartment in Manhattan. He was 23 at the time of his death. Anderson was just 21.

During the interview between Anderson and his mother, the two reflected on the loss. Vanderbilt remarked, "When he went... I thought he was going to come back, but he didn't. He let go, and there was a moment when I thought I was going to jump over after him."

Vanderbilt went on to say that one never "gets over" that kind of tragedy. However she has learned to live with it." Anderson praised his mother's strength and ability to remain true to herself.

Anderson said that the heartbreak and loss "hasn't hardened you. You're still open to experience and open to new loss and open to new heartbreak and to new love."

The full interview airs on Monday. Check your local TV schedule for time and channel information.
